A New Adventure: Getting into Acrylics

Acrylics? Acrylics?! What is going on Rae? I thought you’d never touch acrylics? (Said every artist ever who has said they wouldn’t go buying oils, acrylics, pastels, whatever it may be lol)

Jo Sonja’s Artists’ Colours
(Matte Fluid Acrylics)

  • Ultramarine Blue Deep
  • Yellow Light
  • Napthol Crimson
  • Titanium White
  • Carbon Black

I have a swatch I did here: (which I could of included more tones or better mixing but this was a good effort)

Jo Sonja’s has an amazing selection of colours to choose from including iridescent colours and fortunately seem quite easy to obtain across art stores in Australia (including big craft stores like Lincraft and Spotlight which is a bonus!)

Jo Sonja’s are known for their Deco/Folk art origins but don’t disregard this one as just that. I have no doubts that these paints can do whatever you put in front of them. They are not a glossy acrylic like most, but matte and fluid (not thick). I also bought a Jo Sonja’s Magic Mix medium which does a few things as read on the label. It suppose to allow the paint to remain “open” for longer (good for blending) but also can be used to do floating colour techniques, transparent washes and lightly seals. Seems pretty cool to me 😉

I cannot wait to show you guys what these can do and what kind of artworks I will be able to create with these in comparison to using gouache which is totally water-soluable which in it’s own way is a pro and con

Stay tuned 🙂
